Cast Brass Medallions

3-30-08 Mounted on the wall

Fini! Now I just need to set up the lights and take some nice photos.

Painted board with brackets mounted on the wall

3-29-08 Getting ready to mount them on the wall

It took me some time to figure out where to put them and how to mount them on the wall. Finally I decided to mount them inside above the main passage door so I would get to see them each time I went in and out of the building.

Custom brass brackets fit in recesses routed in the mounting board.

The plywood board, all cut, routed, drilled & filled, is ready for paint.

Stud layout on the wall to show where to put screws so they'd be behind the medallions.

Preassembled ready to take apart before paint and mounting.

When I got them.

I recently got these medallions from a local friend's father's lifetime collection of real cool stuff. They are believed to be from the 70 story skyscraper was originally known as The Bank of Manhattan Company building. It was the tallest building in the world from April, 1930 until May 27, 1930 when the Chrysler Building was complete. When its founding tenant merged with The Chase National Bank to form the Chase Manhattan Bank it was simply known as 40 Wall Street. Currently the Trump Building, it lost its grand main banking hall during an early 1960s renovation of the tower's base.

The one which is the Seal of the United States was bent like a potato chip when I got it. I was able to flatten it using a 50 ton press we have at work. I supported it on the perimeter with wooden blocks and pressed down on the high spots. I was amazed that it moved without cracking which is why I believe it is brass and not bronze.
