THATCHING

Thatching is the act of mechanically removing dead matted grass from the turf. If left unchecked, thatch will choke out healthy grass as it blocks moisture and nutrients.

Same area after thatch removal. Although it looks worse, the grass rebounds quickly.

There are several methods to remove thatch. Topdressing (covering the dead grass with a thin soil layer will cause the thatch to rot and go away over time. Mechanical methods, such as hand raking, verticutting and other mechanical means work much faster and are more effective.

One extremely effective tool to use ids the Mantis Tiller with the thatching attachment. This device has proven extremely effective at removing thatch quickly.
