Zinc Silicate Crystalline Glaze Pottery A chronicle of my recent progress and a way for me to keep it straight in my head! 2-5-11 |
Reduction Is No Fuss With Us!
§terry Fallon is a "plumber" by trade and an inventor at heart. He owns and operates a construction company engaged in the design, installation and maintenance of high rise building sprinkler systems in South Florida, USA. In the last several years he has created a novel system for developing an automatic computer controlled reducing atmosphere in an electric kiln. He is beginning to commercialize products based on this technology. Note: This is the avatar Terry uses on The Crystalline Glaze Forum - from a time when he actually used to throw pots. |
I
first met Terry "online" in early 2007 and then
face to face at Bill Campbell's Krystallos 2007
in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. He's the tall guy on the right in this photo and this photo. He is generally quite well kept but has been known to get down and dirty as you can see in this photo. He has a kind heart, is inquisitive as hell and continues to fascinate me as a brilliant tinkerer. Over the last several years I've worked (played) with §terry to develop some of the components of The Fallonator - a fully automatic electric kiln with built in reduction capability. Besides suggesting the name "Fallonator" my real input has been in the application of products made by my company ZIRCAR Ceramics, Inc. to the system. Note: I think he was going to go with a name like "The Reduction Queen" or "Po Boy's Gas Kiln". |
I have had the honor of getting one of the first Fallonators (photo on the right) and the pleasure of sorting out some of the things it can do along with some other "crystal crazies" - who are actually very good friends - over the last several years. This unit is truly "fully automatic". I am able to load it, press start, walk away and it goes through the whole ^11 reduction cycle by itself. My career is very demanding of my time and without its fully automatic capability I would not be able to fire reduction pieces as easily, or readily, as I can with The Fallonator. |
